Which Trip for Me: Introduction to Open Water or Open Water Development?

By Olivia Weatherill , 06 March, 2018

SwimTrek offers a variety of trips in Mallorca including our Introduction to Open Water or Open Water Development courses, but particularly if you’re new to the open water, it can be difficult to decide from which trip you’ll benefit from the most. There are lots of variations in a beginner, so if you’re considering one of our Mallorca trips for open water newbies, read on to see how you can differentiate the best Mallorca trip for you.

What you’ll get with both

Both our Introduction to Open Water and Open Water Development trips provide guests with a mix of coaching in the pool where we’ll focus on technique and confidence, and getting out and putting your new skills into practice when you’ll complete some fantastic open water swims on the beautiful Mallorca coastline.

The differences

A key differentiator between the two trips are the daily average distances. Our Introduction to Open Water trip has daily average distances of 2km, with these being split over up to 2 swims a day. Guests should be able to swim 1km in a pool without stopping, but no previous open water experience is necessary. The Open Water Development trip has daily average swim distances of 3km, and guest should be able to swim 2km or more. On both trips we have access to the world class BEST Swim Centre that provides top quality, swim training conditions.

Introduction to Open Water is then best suited for:

• Those who can only maintain their front crawl for relatively short periods of time. It is also appropriate for those who struggle to maintain their breathing and rhythm in their stroke • Those who may be competent pool swimmers but find deep or murky water unnerving

Open Water Development is then more appropriate for:

• Swimmers looking for a step up in the level of coaching from that of an introductory level. Speed is of secondary significance as long as swimmers can maintain their stroke • Those looking to build their daily distance stamina to join on other SwimTrek trips where average swim distances are closer to 5km per day or more

Our Introduction to Open Water or Open Water Development trips are led by our incredibly skilled guiding staff. These guides have vast experience in coaching and completing incredible swims themselves, so they have first-hand knowledge of what you’ll be going through! They are also here to support you in the mental side of beginning your open water adventure, whether that be calming your nerves of deep water, to pushing you to finish the last few hundred metres of your swim, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve at the end of your trip with us.

We have put this list together to advise as best as we can on which trip is right for each guest. However, any swimmer whose ability is better than the 3 bullet points of the Introduction week and who can maintain a good level of front crawl is still welcome to join the Introduction if the dates for the Development Camp clash with your schedule. You will still get the full benefit of the drills and training sessions in the pool.

And that’s our advice for choosing between Open Water Coaching and Open Water Development! For any additional questions on which trip would be the best for you, our Customer Team at SwimTrek HQ are happy to assist further. You can contact the team via info@swimtrek.com or by calling 01273 739713.
