Alcatraz. The distance may ‘only’ be 1.5 miles and thousands of people have successfully completed it, but this swim shouldn’t be underestimated.
For prisoners incarcerated on this rocky outcrop, escaping once would have been enough. However, Garry Emich, from San Francisco, is planning to become the first to ‘escape’ one thousand times.
Swimmer, coach and author Emich already has the record for the most number of swims from the island of Alcatraz to San Francisco, and has even written a book describing the different routes and the preparations needed for a successful swim (Open Water Swimming: Lessons from Alcatraz).
Knocking out Alcatraz swims like other swimmers do regular training sessions Emich plans to complete his 1000th swim from Alcatraz on 11 June 2013.
