Tour Highlights
Escape to ‘Ha Long Bay’s Twin’ and swim freely in emerald waters, scattered with over 400 islands of sculptured limestone.
Swim the karst labyrinth, threading between islands and seeking out secret caves and coves. The waters here are home to dolphins, seals and endless varieties of reef fish – residents of a vibrant coral reef ecosystem.
Discover world-renowned Vietnamese culture and cuisine as you delve deep into this fascinating part of the world.
Trace the history of Cát Bà back to the Vietnam War. Enjoy an unmissable walk up to Hospital Cave, located in the National Park, which was built as a bomb proof hideout as well as a hospital for Vietnam soldiers.
Relax at the end of each day at the Flamingo Cat Ba Beach Resort – a beautiful modern addition to this prehistoric landscape with its own spa, infinity pools, sky bar, private beach, and more!
Lan Ha Bay is the quiet twin and neighbour of the more crowded Ha Long Bay – no less beautiful and spanning more than 7,000 hectares, filled with sculptured limestone and sleepy coves. The bay is known for its rich biodiversity, with depths that descend to a colourful coral reef ecosystem and over 400 karst islands thrust upward from emerald waters.
‘Ha Long Bay’s Twin’ is one of the most ideal locations to swim in Vietnam, relieved of puttering boat traffic and home to dolphins, seals, and every colour of reef fish imaginable. The largest island in the bay is Cát Bà which is our base for the trip and home to the endangered Cát Bà langur. The island is covered by humid jungle terrain and famous for its use as a strategic base for North Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War.
Total post-swim relaxation awaits each day as we return to our private bay at the Flamingo Cát Bà Beach Resort. There you will be spoilt for amenities with options to visit a spa, private beach, infinity pools, 3 large restaurants, 2 pool bars and even a sky bay with incredible views over the bay waters.
Please be aware that runoff from the lush, green islands can sometimes reduce water clarity in the open water. However, be assured it is still absolutely safe and suitable for swimming.
Who is this trip for?
This trip is designed for those who want to combine spectacular swimming among the karst islands and limestone outcrops of Lan Ha Bay with optional hikes around the area’s dramatic landscapes and a taste of Vietnamese culture. Swims include a mix of coastal exploration and point-to-point crossings. The geography of the bay means it is usually possible to find sheltered waters to avoid any choppiness.
Swimmers should have a basic understanding of open water swimming and be capable of completing the average swim distance and average daily swim distance (over the course of two swims) prior to the start of the trip.
The average swim distance is around 2.5km. The average daily swim distance is around 4km.
We have given this trip a ‘Moderate’ grading. Most swimmers comfortable in the open water will be able to take part and enjoy one of these trips.
